Hours of love and passion, energy and commitment, concentration and effort fill the pages of our most enticing reads and very often we turn the pages without giving much thought into what it took to create that which we are enjoying.  We immerse ourselves in the alternate reality and lose track of time and place as the story sweeps us away from our own troubles or concerns; though frequently through drawing us into others, either imaginary or history.  Yet we who love words find little else so satisfying or gratifying as those beautiful pages of ink and typeset.  Whether we are the reader or the writer, the pleasure is undeniable and, hopefully, inescapable!

So when an author whose writing we admire and thoroughly enjoy takes time out of their busy schedule to read our own words, the honour is entirely REAL, though often indescribable. And (I know, I know…

Today didn’t go as well as yesterday. I still came in slightly over 2000 words, and hope for more tomorrow. I wrote the scene with The Hanged Man, and it came out pretty well. I don’t know that his lesson is finished, but the Hanged Man has been buried. Yak guy needs to reflect upon it while he’s crossing the steppes. Maybe he can find some connection to the Hermit and decide he misjudged the fellow to a degree. Maybe the yak can throw that in his face, which is what usually happens.

When he gets home, he will find the shit’s really hit the fan. This will move the story into act three, and he’s going to have to make some big, life changing, decisions. I need to get him home, but I don’t want to lose the idea that it takes a long time to ride a yak…

I went to my bi-weekly writer’s critique group last night. We get submittals ahead of time, gather our thoughts and comments, and then each of us gets 5 minutes during the meeting to share our suggestions. This week, we were reviewing the work of one of my favorite group authors–we’ll call her Mari. She is writing an amazing piece about a family coping with Alzheimer’s. It’s character-driven fiction, but could also be classified as creative non-fiction so detailed and realistic are the scenes.
